- For years, the United States has asked Spain to sell them the island of Cuba. The United States desired the island because Cuba produced massive amounts of sugar and tropical products which are not present in the United States except for Florida. Cuba has been in a constant rebellion since 1895. The rebels hold extense parts of central Cuba but lack the force to kick the Spaniards out of the island. That revolution was seen in the US as an oportunity to take Cuba. On the 25th of January 1898, the USS Maine entered the harbour of Manila. However, on the fifteenth of February, the ship suddenly exploded. Two investigation commisions were sent, one being Spanish and one being American. The American one sustained that the ship was destroyed by an external attack while the Spanish one said it has been an incident coming from inside the ship. Before this, the US had sent it's Pacific Fleet to Hong Kong as a preparative to attack the Philippines and Guam, Spanish colonies. The United States declared war on Spain on 25th April 1898.
